Bridge the Generation Gap With an Electronic Notepad
Our website is designed to give you the information you need to make good choices and find good deals on an electronic notepad and selected other accessories for your executive responsibilities.
I love my electronic notepad for so many reasons:
- It is light and so easy to grab and go
- It is NOT a battery hog; it can last for a couple of hundred hours
- It uses common batteries that can be found almost anywhere making my digital notepad superior to a computer that must be charged often
But one of the most powerful things an electronic notepad can do is to bridge across the technology gap among generations.
The Y, X and Boomer Gap
In 2008, research provider LexisNexis initiated a study to: "investigate whether or not there is a gap between generations of legal and white collar professionals in terms of technology in the workplace."
The sample size of 700 was restricted to white coller workers (educators, health care professionals, other professional service providers) and legal professionals (not paralegal).
The Study revealed interesting information about how Generation Y (under 28), Generation X (29-43), and Baby Boomers (44-60) used technology differently.
Although a full 88% of all white collar professionals believed that the use of technology added to workplace productivity, there was a disparity among groups about the acceptable use of technology.
Of most significance to this article is that:
1. "While a over two thirds (68%) of all Boomers agree that PDAs andmobile phones contribute to a decline in proper workplace etiquette, less than half (46%) of Gen Y workers think so."
2. "While over two thirds of Boomer workers think the use of a laptop or PDA during in-person meetings is “distracting”(68%), less than half (49%) of Gen Y workers think so."
3. "While only 17% of Boomers think using laptops or PDAs during in-person meetings is “efficient,”over one third (35%) of Gen Y think it is."
So, let's imagine that you are young professional (Gen Y or Gen X). I'm sure you don't need to be reminded that the ones holding the power are more likely than not Boomers.
Therefore, the challenges that you face are:
- How to use the power of technology in such a way that your use does not offend (#1 above).
- How to increase your own efficiency by using devices for note taking, creativity, and sharing during meetings in such a way that you win over the Boomers (#2 and #3 above).
An electronic notepad can help you rise to the challenges.
An Electronic Notepad Straddles the Generations
An electronic notepad lives in all of these world at once. It can create digital copies that take advantage of the power or remixing, editing, revising, marking up, annotating and sharing. But it can also allow us to do something very powerful to demonstrate to the powerful Boomer. Wait for it . . .
YOU'RE ABLE TO GENEROUSLY GIVE THEM THE ORIGINAL NOTES AND DRAWINGS MADE FROM THE MEETING!!!
They don't have to wait! And, they don't have to know how to open up that danged "thing" or log onto whatyoumaycallit.
How powerful is that? And, it's very personal. It is you, standing face-to-face with your boss and offering your notes and drawings–your originals. Of course, you will also help educate him or her by assuring them that your copy is saved and you will be able to retrieve it later.
You also promise to send a digital copy to their email. So if they are not technologically literate about opening attachments, you've gracefully given them the opportunity to act like they know what this means. They don't really need to open the attachment since they have your original had copy. You want to make points with a VP? Try this sometime.
It's All About Service and Consideration
I think a lot of older executives are not as impressed with the dynamic use of technology as most of us are. But they are impressed with service and consideration of their time. A digital notepad is a powerful tool to help provide both.
